Background
Having grown up in Rochester, New York, the home of Kodak, I was exposed to cameras throughout my life. During high school I had a love for photography, and at a very young age I began taking snapshots with my Kodak Instamatic camera. I took a photography course in high school, and over the years I took online courses and workshops. During my career as a high school English and Journalism teacher, I ran a community newspaper and taught my students how to take digital photographs. Later, as the Director of the Career in Teaching Program of the Rochester City School District, I was able to incorporate my photography skills when creating educational videos and books to help new teachers and mentors.
Photography
Since retiring from my career as an educator, I have continued to explore the world of photography by joining local, national and international photography organizations. I spend a majority of my time learning and practicing new photography and editing skills. My favorite subjects to photograph include the following: wildlife, nature, and still life. I especially enjoy photographing birds while they are engaged in interesting behavior. I have learned the importance of being patient when capturing images of them. If I'm not out in parks or nature preserves, I usually have my tripod set up in my kitchen, where I can discreetly take shots of birds as they engage in courting rituals, bathe in the waterfall, gather materials for their nests or interact with other wildlife. By using a telephoto lens, I try to capture images that allow the viewer to see birds with a level of detail that one could only otherwise imagine. I also find pleasure by arranging simple objects found within my home and then using lighting to create interesting still life images. I process my photos to accentuate the color and contrast, and then I typically print my pieces on metal to further draw out those qualities. I hope some of my photos inspire you to look at the natural beauty that exists around us in our backyards, parks, and homes.
Gallery Exhibits
In January, 2022 I was very fortunate to be invited to join the Image City Photography Gallery (www.imagecityphotographygallery.com/index.htm) as a partner. A very dedicated group began the gallery in 2005 and since its opening, more than 200 shows have been exhibited. As a Partner I have the opportunity to show my work regularly, interact with other photographers and the public. Please stop by the gallery, located at 722 University Avenue; Rochester, NY in the Neighborhood of the Arts, so that you can see the quality of my photographs. The excellence of the photographs on display by the partners and guest photographers is quite impressive. For additional information about my gallery exhibits, please click here: Gallery Exhibits.
